Pagosa Quality Fishing Project on the San Juan River

Pagosa Springs is a GREAT CATCH this summer for fly fishing.  Recently, the town began the stocking of more than 9,000 Rainbow trout as part of its Pagosa Quality Fishing Project. The stocking will enhance the already popular fishing destination for tourists and locals visiting the San Juan River.

Approximately two miles of the world-class fishery flows through downtown Pagosa Springs and the stockings stretch from the intersection of Hwy 84 and 160 through the Apache Street Bridge. The ponds located within River Center Park will also be stocked with trout. Fish between 12-24 inches, weighing up to six pounds will be stocked weekly through August 4, 2008.

“This is an incredible amount of fish for a short amount of stream – higher than what we (Colorado Division of Wildlife) would typically stock,” said Jim White, aquatic biologist for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. This very aggressive stocking plan of large trout to public waters will undoubtedly produce outstanding fishing through downtown Pagosa Springs.”
